Ford 300 Inline 6 Cylinder Engine

The Ford 300 inline six-cylinder engine was first introduced for the 1965 model year to be used in the popular F series pickup truck. Ford would keep the 300 in production all the way up until 1996. During its 31 year run, this extremely reliable inline 6 was used in many Ford vehicles and also in anything from tractors and wood chippers to that big brown UPS truck that you see driving around your neighborhood.

The Ford 300 was never much of a powerhouse even after it got a fuel injection upgrade for 1987 model Ford and Mercury vehicles. The early carburated models only produced about 100 horsepower with the strongest version of the 300 coming out in the late 60s producing 170 horsepower.

Torque was the main reason that the 300 was so popular for so many years. Considering it had a four-inch bore and 3.98-inch stroke, it pushed the engine up to 223 lb of foot torque and by the 1990s, that figure was over 260. Again, the strongest torque of all models was seen in the late 60 production years which was rated at 283.

More importantly for people wanting major pulling power, the 300 inline 6 produced a majority of its torque starting at around the 2000 RPM ranges. This was enhanced even more by an available transmission setup that offered either a 6.32:1 lower gear in the T-18 manual transmission or a 6.69:1 lower gear in the NP-435 transmission.

Today it is not uncommon at all to see a Ford 300 make it to 300,000 miles or more with no major problems at all. Because of its great reputation for reliability and ease of maintenance, the 300 I6 is still sought after among many Ford enthusiasts.
